MOKKO / BED BUYING GUIDE

A modern platform bed, beyond the surface.

Compare the materials, mattress support and delivery details before choosing a frame. Start with what is actually being built, then decide which design suits your room.

01

What modern platform bed actually means

Modern usually describes clean lines and an uncluttered profile, often with a visually low frame. Japandi describes a design direction, not a material specification. Neither label tells you what is beneath a wood-grain surface.

A platform bed supports the mattress on a platform or slats without a box spring. Check the finished bed height as well as the frame: the mattress thickness changes how high the sleeping surface will be.

Materials compared: look beyond the surface

A wood-grain surface does not tell you everything about a bed. Ask what each component is made from, including the material beneath any decorative face. Wood veneer is real wood, but it describes a thin surface layer, not the core underneath.

General material characteristics, not a ranking of finished beds or a comparison of individual sellers.
MaterialWhat to look forDurability and repair questionsMoisture response
Solid woodAsk to see an exposed end or cross-section. Boards may be joined together; grain on the face alone is not proof.Ask how the finish and damaged components can be repaired. Material choice alone does not establish the lifespan of the finished bed.Wood expands and contracts as its moisture content changes. The construction needs to accommodate that movement.
Wood veneerA thin real-wood face bonded to a separate core. Ask whether that core is solid wood, plywood, particleboard or MDF.Assess the face, core and bonding together. Ask about veneer thickness before sanding or refinishing; sanding removes material. Both the veneer and its core can respond to moisture. Different movement between layers can cause surface problems.
ParticleboardAn uncovered edge can reveal pressed wood particles, often with finer particles at the faces. A decorative covering may hide them.Ask about panel grade, connections and replacement parts, not just the surface finish.Resistance varies with the resin and product specification. Wetting can cause thickness swelling that does not fully reverse.
MDFA fibre-based panel rather than whole boards or visible coarse particles. Check the actual core, not its painted or veneered face.Ask what can be repaired or replaced if an edge or surface is damaged.Check the specified moisture resistance and edge protection. Do not assume every grade behaves the same way.

Weight is a clue, not a reliable material test: wood species, moisture, panel density and component dimensions all affect it. Grain continuity can help you inspect an exposed edge, but a photograph or finished face alone cannot establish the core. If the edges are covered, ask for a material breakdown or sample rather than guessing.

03

Slats and support

Ask for the slat dimensions and spacing, then compare them with the support requirements for your exact mattress. Ask how the centre is supported for the size you are ordering, where any support legs meet the floor, and which parts need assembly. A material label or style photograph does not answer these questions.

MOKKO bed pages list a ventilated slat platform that supports the mattress without a box spring, and standard clearance of 10 inches from the floor to the underside of the side rail. Confirm the final clearance and outside dimensions for the selected design before production.

If you are choosing the mattress too, explore the MOKKO Extra Firm and Medium coir mattresses. Ask about compatibility rather than assuming one support specification suits every mattress.

Made to order locally and flat-pack: different decisions

These are not opposites. Made to order describes when a piece is produced; flat-pack describes how it is supplied for transport and assembly. A made-to-order bed can also need assembly. Ask each seller about production, stock, delivery and installation separately.

For an order made to your requirements, confirm which dimensions can change, the approved specification and the production schedule. For a packaged frame, check the actual package dimensions, what assembly involves and whether installation is included. In either case, ask who handles questions after delivery; do not assume a particular service or remedy.

What drives the price

Wood species, component dimensions, headboard design, finishing and the work involved in making and assembling a frame can all affect the price. Compare like-for-like sizes and included services, not just the photograph or headline price.

MOKKO bed frames are made to order in Richmond, BC, with Premium Pine as the standard timber. The internal structure remains Premium Pine; Kirameki's central headboard panel remains plywood. Frequently asked questions

What is a modern platform bed?

A platform bed supports the mattress on a platform or slats without a box spring. Modern describes a clean-lined design, not a particular material or support specification.

Is a wood-grain surface proof that a bed is solid wood?

No. Ask for the material beneath the surface and for a breakdown of the side rails, headboard, slats and any panels. Wood veneer is a thin real-wood face, not a description of the core underneath.

What is the standard clearance on MOKKO bed frames?

MOKKO bed pages list standard clearance of 10 inches from the floor to the underside of the side rail. Confirm the final clearance and outside frame dimensions for the chosen design before production.

Where are MOKKO beds made, and how long does production take?

MOKKO beds are made to order in Richmond, BC. Typical production time is 3-4 weeks. This is production time, not a promise of the delivery date.

How do local delivery, pickup and workshop visits work?

Local furniture delivery is a CAD $69 flat rate including installation within 25 km of the workshop. Workshop pickup is available. MOKKO has no showroom; workshop visits are by appointment. Request a quote before payment for delivery outside that area.
